Magna Carta - a charter, signed in 1215 by the English King John 1. It is composed in the Latin language and contains 63 articles. The document was signed as a result of dissatisfaction with the barons strengthening of royal power, tax burden, and a failed foreign policy of the king. Most of the articles reflected and protected the interests of the aristocracy. However, other estates also received significant rights. Magna Carta guaranteed the observance of the king certain obligations with respect to the barons, kings prohibited to levy taxes without the consent of the governed. Charter laid the foundation for the freedom of the individual. No one could be arrested, imprisoned, deprived of his property, or protection of the laws, banished, or subjected to a four of a kind, except by a court of his peers and according to the laws of the country. It was the first document in the history of England, limiting the power of the crown and proclaiming the rights and freedoms of citizens. Magna Carta was the cornerstone of English liberties. Several of her articles have been developed in the Habeas Corpus Act and the Bill of Rights. Magna Carta has played a crucial role in English history. It now ranks among the existing acts UK constitution.
