После двадцати лет, проведенных в пустыне, святой совершил свое первое чудо. Вскоре множество людей стали приходить к нему в лачугу, обращаясь за помощью. Некоторые просили позволения остаться, чтобы обучиться от него молитвам и дабы наложить на себя епитимью. В своей великой любви к людям и Господу святой пригласил их остаться. Потом, будучи уже в 65-летнем возрасте он начал путешествовать. Он ходил из одной страны в другую в поисках спокойствия и уединения. Однако, молва о его милосердных чудесах бежала впереди него. За несколько лет до смерти в 371 году Иларион действительно остался один на один с Господом. Когда он умер, ему было 80 лет.
