Реформа школы 2000 года подразумевает введение 12-летнего школьного обучения. Эта реформа начнётся в 2001 году с эксперимента, : котором примут участие почти 1 миллион детей.
Противники утверждают, что нет условий для раздельного обучения, дополнительных учебных программ для выпускных классов и критериев оценки этого эксперимента. Многие вспоминают провальный эксперимент в 70-ые годы из-за сложной методики.
Также существует недовольство по поводу перестройки российской школы по американской модели. 12-летка лишь часть новых преобразований в системе образования. В первую очередь хотят ввести единый государственный экзамен, который будет проводиться среди выпускников средних школ в письменной форме. Результаты будут засчитываться вузами при поступлении. Цель экзамена устранить неравенство между выпускниками и выявить тех кто будет учиться платно и бесплатно. Те, кто хорошо учатся на платном отделении, будут иметь возможность снижать плату благодаря хорошей учебе. Ректоры вузов критикуют этот элемент реформы и настаивают на вступительных экзаменах, считая что оценка знаний выпускников не будет объективной
