Выбор безъядерного статуса – это результат осознания Казахстаном опасных последствий дисбаланса мировой системы безопасности в начале 90-х годов. Сохранение атомного арсенала торпедировало бы складывающуюся десятилетиями систему нераспространения ядерного оружия. Появление на политической карте мира столь мощных новых ядерных государств могло дать фатальный толчок к разрушению мирового ядерного баланса. Отказ от ядерного оружия связан с тем, что Казахстан с первых дней своей независимости избрал миролюбивый внешнеполитический курс. Этим актом международному сообществу было продемонстрирована открытость нашей внешней политики, наша приверженность миру, свободному от насилия и военной угрозы. Отказавшись от ядерного оружия, Казахстан не просто приобрел международный авторитет. Страна получила прочные гарантии территориальной целостности и уважения суверенитета от ядерных держав – США, России, Великобритании, Франции и Китая. И сегодня безъядерный статус Казахстана – это основа мира и безопасности по всему периметру наших границ. Это реальная возможность плодотворного сотрудничества Казахстана с другими странами.
