Фильм и книга это просто разные произведения, в которых у героев одинаковые имена, а сюжет похож. Читая книгу, Вы в воображении рисуете образы героев, а в фильме для Вас это уже сделал режиссёр. И не всегда режиссёрское видение совпадает с Вашим.
Иногда и сюжет фильма от книги отличается, какие-то эпизоды выбрасываются, некоторые дописываются. И потом, уложить толстый том в 1,5 часа времени на экране не всегда получается.
Если по каким-то причинам нужно быстро ознакомиться с сюжетом, а времени читать нет, то фильм выручит. Но тогда мысли, возникающие по ходу действия будут подсказаны режиссёром. Получится восприятие произведения через посредника.
Итого, я за первоисточник.

Хотя, конечно, известны примеры хороших фильмов по не слишком удачным произведениям.
